If one dumps the reciprocity ledger, how to know if you are giving too much away?
Perhaps a little girl gives her money to others, and needs to learn when it’s appropriate and when it’s not.
Perhaps when it’s truly altruistic, it doesn’t matter how much is given away. What difference does it make?
With little kids, there’s the suspicion of positive reciprocity in play (and attempts to win friends, favours, self esteem).
Maybe that doesn’t matter either, so long as it’s not a life long habit of reciprocity bypassing.
